In 2004, when the Massachusetts legislature was considering taking away equal marriage rights, one of the most powerful moral voices in support of marriage equality was the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA).  Their national office building  was literally next door to the statehouse.  It had a constant physical and moral presence that made a difference.

In fact, the “UUs” as they are often called, have been on the front lines in marriage battles since then, and HRC has worked alongside them and many other religious groups in this struggle.

This year, the UUA has launched a nationwide campaign for marriage equality, ”Standing on the Side of Love.”  As part of the campaign, UU congregations across the country are organizing and mobilizing to make marriage equality a reality.   After all, one of the seven principles of the UUs is to promote “the inherent worth and dignity of all persons.”

This past Sunday I proudly participated in my UU congregation’s Standing on the Side of Love service in Bethesda, Maryland.  I was moved by the support I received by my fellow congregants to help defend marriage equality in DC, and educate neighbors and legislators in Maryland, hoping to pass marriage in 2011.

It was a powerful day that brought many parts of my life together, including another UU principal: a free and responsible search for truth and meaning. Read more about the Standing on the side of Love campaign at www.standingonthesideoflove.org
