rally 6

Yesterday, in Trenton, hundreds of advocates and activists came together to demand that the New Jersey legislature do the right thing and pass legislation granting full marriage equality to the LGBT community in that state. HRC is proud to partner with our friends at Garden State Equality in working on this bill. I received an update late last night from one of our organizers, Amanda Holmes:

rally 3Today was our Lobby Day in Trenton.  It was amazing to be here with over 200 of our supporters, my fellow HRC organizers and the entire statewide staff of Garden State Equality!  It’s been a long day, but I must admit it was absolutely worth waking up at 5:15am this morning for the experience.  We had a wide range of supporters: LGBT, straight allies, leaders and clergy representing numerous denominations and faith traditions. We marched from the GSE Trenton headquarters to the Statehouse where we had a rally and then facililated a massive Lobby Day. Despite the cold weather and long periods of waiting between meetings and committee hearings, we kept up the energy and everyone had a great time. A strong supporter of the legislation Senator Loretta Weinberg encouraged us to keep up the pressure, and assured us that this is a winnable effort.

I am amazed at the energy and dedication of the volunteers who are a part of this effort. Their enthusiasm and hope is truly inspiring. Yesterday was great, but we still need more help and more volunteers. To get involved, contact Karl Bach at Karl.Bach@hrc.org. Join us!
