Last night in Huntington on Long Island, 22 people gathered to hear a political update on marriage equality in New York from HRC’s New York Political Co-Chair Patty Ellis. This team of people worked together in 2008 to help elect a fair-minded majority to the New York State Senate and have been warriors for marriage equality on Long Island for all of 2009.

Patty and the Long Island team have gathered more than 4,000 letters to Long Island state senators, meeting at 6 a.m. at Long Island Rail Road stations to gather these letters starting in early April. Last night they handed me an additional 500 postcards to be delivered to their senators. Even with all the chaos in Albany, this team and others across New York have not relented and are committed to see this through to the end.

With the Thanksgiving holiday just a week away, they still met and decided to phone bank until there’s a vote on marriage equality in Albany. They will be hosting phone banks in Nassau and Suffolk counties until there is a vote.

The recent announcement of senate leadership committing to a vote on the marriage equality bill has added fuel to this team’s fire. If you want to volunteer on Long Island or at our New York City phone banks, please email me at Anthony.Hayes@HRC.org.
