The University of Alabama at Birmingham will provide domestic partner benefits beginning January 1, becoming the fifth Alabama-based employer to do so. The majority of U.S. News & World Report’s top colleges and universities offer partner benefits, and many more are considering as they lose talented staff to institutions that provide partner benefits.

From the Birmingham News:

Dale Turnbough, a UAB spokeswoman, said the change was made “to create a positive, supportive and diverse work environment,” and to help the school compete for new faculty with other National Institute of Health-funded medical schools. This particular change comes after years of pressure from LGBT faculty and staff, and several months after the release of the film below that features LGBT faculty and staff of UAB:

Other Alabama-based employers that offer partner benefits include ADS Corp., Intergraph Corp., MCM Technology LLC and Vulcan Materials Co. Are we missing any? Please let us know.
