testimony-training2Over 60 marriage equality advocates gathered last night here at HRC headquarters to train and draft their testimony for Monday’s hearing in DC on bill 18-482, the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act of 2009. The HRC conference room bustled with a focused energy and commitment to ensuring that marriage equality becomes a matter of law in our nation’s capital.

The workshop was facilitated by Michael Crawford from DC 4 Marriage, HRC Regional Field Director Sultan Shakir, and HRC Organizer Nick McCoy.  To kick it off, they outlined the procedure for the upcoming hearing.  With over 150 people signed up to testify, we expect the hearing to last for at least two days and we’re working hard to ensure that the testimony reflects the diversity of our community as well as accurately reflects that struggles faced by same-sex couples who continue to be denied access to marriage equality.

At the training, participants were given the opportunity draft their testimony and to present it in front of that larger group.  Those who presented did an amazing job of articulating the need for marriage equality from various perspectives.

The testimony training proved that our community and our allies are ready to stand up for the advancement of all families through the passage of the “Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Equality Amendment Act of 2009.”  Thank you so much for the work of the sponsoring organizations and thank you to those who attended.

DON’T FORGET: Tomorrow is the last day to register to testify on Monday.  Contact Ms. Deborah Kelly, Legislative Clerk, at (202) 724-7808, by fax at (202) 724-6664, or via e-mail at dkelly@dccouncil.us, and provide your name, address, telephone number, organizational affiliation and title (if any).
