8 Days Left to Make History in Maine

LA PBI have been in Maine since January working to pass, and now defend the same-sex marriage law. The work we have done for months, now comes down to the next 8 days! When we defeat Question 1, Maine will be the first state to successfully defend marriage equality at the ballot box!

Hundreds of volunteers are working tirelessly, across the state to ensure that every supporter that we have identified actually turns out and VOTES!  Although I do not have the space to tell the story of every wonderful volunteer that I have had the privilege of working with, I wanted to put some faces to the battle for marriage equality here.

Jess, Eric, ConnorEric and Jess and their son Connor have been volunteering on the campaign for the last few months. Although hesitant at first, or at least Jess was – according to Eric — they have stepped up and taken ownership of the phone banks in Lewiston. By training and coaching the ever growing team of volunteers, they are making the difference between winning and losing. After the phone bank last week, I spoke with them about their experience. Eric talked about what an incredible experience this has been. He feels that Jess and himself are making a difference not only by talking to voters on the phones and training others to do so, but also by now having the confidence to step out in their community and be honest about how their family is affected by over-turning the same-sex marriage law. Eric and Jess are hopeful for the time when their 12-year relationship and the family they have built will be protected under the law.

Eric and Jess are not alone. There are thousands of Mainers just like them who are fighting for equality.

We continue the march toward victory for the next 10 days. We will be calling our supporters and knocking on their doors to make sure they vote by Election Day! Right now this race is a dead heat and we need the continued support of our friends across the country.
