A quick update on the possibility that domestic partnerships in Washington State will be put to voters in November to approve or reject…
Yesterday the Secretary of State completed counting and officially certified the results of their count saying they found 122,007 valid signatures which is 1,430 more than the bare minimum required to put it on the ballot.
However, Washington Families Standing Together — the campaign to preserve domestic partnerships in Washington — has filed suit saying that some of the signatures collected and accepted as valid should have been rejected because they were collected and submitted in violation of Washington’s laws meant to prevent fraud in the signature process. A first suit was dismissed yesterday under jurisdictional issues but the judge also said she had serious concerns over the issues raised by the case. Now a new case has been filed in Thurston County which the original judge said was the proper jurisdiction.
Finally, in related news, new public opinion research shows very strong support for Domestic Partnerships in Washington State. According to the Seattle newspaper The Stranger, the non-partisan Washington Poll shows a consistent increase in support for DPs with a 2008 poll showing a full 66% of voters favoring either marriage or domestic partnerships for same-sex couples.
