Congressman Jim McDermott (D-WA), a longtime friend and ally to our community in the United States House of Representatives, submitted a resolution last Thursday honoring the theaters participating in the production of “The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later” and expressing the House’s continuing condemnation of all violent acts motivated by hatred, including the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard over a decade ago due to his sexual orientation.
“The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later” focuses on the long-term effects of Matthew Shepard’s murder on his hometown of Laramie, Wyoming, exploring how the town has changed and how Shepard’s death continues to have a powerful impact on the community. It is an epilogue to the highly acclaimed play “The Laramie Project,” which was first performed in 2000 and has been among the most honored and widely performed plays of the past decade.
On October 12, 2009, “The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later” will be performed by more than 100 companies and schools worldwide. The performance date marks the 11th anniversary of Shepard’s death. The Tectonic Theater Project’s website has a list of performances.
