This post on our ongoing work to approve Referendum 71 in Washington comes from HRC Organizer Adrian Matanza.

Last night, members of HRC Seattle, supporters of Approve 71 and I met at the Equal Rights Washington office in Seattle to phone bank and recruit volunteers in the city. Since referendum 71 was certified for the ballot only 8 weeks prior to the election, the biggest opportunity for us is to recruit more volunteers to reach out to the millions of voters need to win the election.
The twenty nine volunteers and I made over 1600 calls and recruited 43 volunteers for the upcoming week. With only ten phone lines, the volunteers were racking up their cellphone minutes, all for an important cause.
Bring your cellphones and join the HRC hosted phonebanks every Tuesday at the Equal Rights Washington office at 720 7th Ave. or the Saturday phone banks at 11am at the UFCW Union Hall located at 5030 1st Ave South, in SODO.
Check out the ApproveReferendum71.org website for the latest information on the campaign or contact me at adrian.matanza@hrc.org. We have three weeks until Washingtonians start voting. Now is the time to get involved!
In other Washington News… new polling shows that when voters read the ballot language, 51 percent approve Ref 71 and 44 percent reject Ref 71. This is a closer margin than previous polls because it’s looking at LIKELY VOTERS which are fewer (and tend to be more conservative) in this off-year election. Says the Approve Ref 71 campaign: “Clearly the winner of this election will be determined by voter turn out. We need to turn out the vote and encourage our friends, family and neighbors to vote. If would be a tragedy if families in Washington lost protections because people didn’t mail in their ballots.”
