Arizona Loses Ground in Fight for Equality

In 2008, Governor Janet Napolitano enacted through executive order a new state policy to provide equal benefits to all state employees. Finally, all state employees – regardless of their marital status – could cover their partners and families under their health insurance plan. Last week, Republican Governor Jan Brewer signed the Republican budget that eliminated these common-sense provisions.

“Americans support efforts to ensure quality, affordable health care for all. At the same time Congress and our President are working to expand health coverage to all Americans, it is shameful that the Arizona Governor and legislature would specifically target one group of families to receive less protection than their coworkers,” said Linda Elliott, a member of HRC’s Board from Arizona. “The Human Rights Campaign is committed to doing the work that needs to be done in order to ensure this provision is re-instated and that Arizona becomes a state where all Arizonans are treated equally under the law.”

If you’d like to voice your frustration and let the elected leaders who repealed this provision know how you feel, then send a personalized note to them through HRC’s Action Center.
