If you’re a same-sex couple legally married in the U.S. or abroad, as of 12:01 am this morning, the District of Columbia recognizes your relationship for what it is… a marriage. Congratulations to Mayor Fenty, the vast majority of the District Council and the many local activists who made this day a reality. HRC’s press release here.
The Washington Postpublished a good Q & A today outlining what the new law means (“Can I now get married in the District? If my spouse and I were legally married in another jurisdiction and now live in Maryland or Virginia, can we move to the District and be recognized? What rights do same-sex couples have?” etc.). Also, it’s not often I link to a Washington Times story but today’s “Married gays see progress in D.C.” has some good personal stories and a history of rights expansion for same-sex couples in the District.
