A Somber Anniversary: Barry Winchell's Murder

This weekend marked the 10th anniversary of the murder of Pfc. Barry Winchell, a 22 year old soldier who was killed by a comrade with a baseball bat as he lay asleep in his bed.  Winchell was in a relationship with Calpernia Addams – a transgender woman — and once this came to light, he was targeted for harrassment by some of his fellow soldiers.

Michael Rowe writing in Huffington Post this weekend recalls the tragic events and not only honors Barry’s memory but also highlights the connections between anti-gay hate crimes, transgender rights, and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell that are often overlooked.
