Victory in Wisconsin

Wisconsin_mapFollowing up to a story we’ve been following, last night the Wisconsin state Senate approved the state budget by a narrow 17-16 vote.  The budget contains important basic domestic partnership protections for same-sex couples, including hospital visitation rights and the ability to use Family Medical leave to care for a partner.  As we noted earlier this week, the budget has already passed the House, so the final budget now goes to Gov. Jim Doyle’s desk.  Our friends at Fair Wisconsin report that Gov. Doyle, who included the domestic partner protections as part of his proposed budget, is expected to sign the budget into law later this month.

Congratulations to Fair Wisconsin, the legislators who voted in favor of domestic partner protections, and Gov. Doyle, for including the protections in his proposed budget.  Congratulations also to everyone who took action by calling or emailing their legislators—in a vote this close, every contact mattered.
