Today Maine Governor John Baldacci signed a marriage equality bill passed by the state legislature, making Maine the fifth state in the U.S. to allow same-sex couples to legally marry under state law.

A few staffers went up to roof again to raise the Maine state flag over the Human Rights Campaign headquarters in Washington, DC.  I briefly chatted with Marty Rouse, HRC’s national field director and Susanne Salkind, HRC’s managing director – and former Maine resident – about the marriage bill.

At this rate, we’re going to need a few more flag poles!
