With the clock ticking on the legislative session in Springfield, leaders of communities of faith around the state have been among the many voices advocating for passage of the Illinois Religious Freedom Protection and Civil Union Act (SB 1716).
“As a person of faith, I fully support all who wish to live with integrity in civil union,” said Hugh Muldoon, Director of University Christian Ministries, an interfaith center located in downstate Carbondale, IL.
Muldoon, whose ministry is supported by the United Church of Christ, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Church of the Brethren, and the Presbyterian Church USA, is hopeful about the future. “It is one of my deepest hopes that people of all faiths will realize that our brothers and sisters seeking their human rights should be supported.”
The University Christian Ministries in Carbondale is just one of a variety of churches welcoming to LGBT individuals in Illinois. Within the United Methodist Church alone there is a network, known as the Reconciling Ministries Network, which has grown to include 23 reconciling congregations and ministries in the Land of Lincoln and hundreds nationwide.
When asked his opinion on Senate Bill 1716 Rev. Troy Plummer, Executive Director of the Reconciling Ministries Network based in Chicago, stated, “As a gay person of faith who understands God’s love and justice for all of His children, I called my State Representative in Springfield in support of civil unions.”
The bill, which clearly indicates that religious bodies would not be mandated to recognize the unions, was delayed yesterday by 5 procedural clarifications requested by an opponent. SB 1716 is expected to move to order of third reading in the House today and could go to a vote thereafter.
In the past few days legislative staffers have reported an influx of calls and emails for and against the civil union bill. If the bill reaches a vote, it is expected to be very close. At this time it is absolutely crucial that Illinoisans urge their legislators to support the civil union bill–not only as an LGBT voter or ally, but also as a person of faith. Rev. Plummer was proud to have already contacted his representatives in Springfield, and he “encourages all faithful people to do the same.”
