HRC raises Iowa flag; National Field Director Marty Rouse discusses progress on marriage equality

HRC raised the Iowa state flag over its headquarters to celebrate the Iowa Supreme Court ruling on April 3 in favor of marriage equality.

To celebrate the Iowa Supreme Court ruling today that gay and lesbian couples cannot be denied the right to marry under state law, HRC staff members raised the Iowa state flag over our headquarters in Washington, DC.

I recorded video of the flag being raised over the building and spoke with HRC National Field Director Marty Rouse and Western Regional Field Organizer Terry McGuire, who has worked with One Iowa to train LGBT grassroots activists, on the significance of today’s court decision for the national movement for marriage and LGBT equality. 

Today Iowa’s motto rings especially true for its LGBT residents: “Our Liberties We Prize and Our Rights We Will Maintain.”
