Having worked in Iowa electoral politics from 2006-2008, it’s great to be back here in the Hawkeye state. After Iowa’s unanimous court decision for marriage equality we are organizing and prepping for summer like crazy. Coming back and meeting with state legislators and others with whom I’ve worked and to hear the support has been great. Working with One Iowa’s team on the ground has been incredible. We have been organizing Iowans to contact their legislators and thank them for their support as opponents try to play politics with the constitution.
Iowa has always been on the forefront of civil rights, and as I called through lists of voters, it’s amazing to talk with people–young, old, gay, straight, married, and single–who feel so positive about marriage equality. I spoke with a woman in her 60s yesterday who told me she got ordained right after the decision! Being from the Midwest it’s nice to come back and be in a place that is on the forefront of civil rights for our LGBT family, friends, and neighbors.
Thanks to everyone who has helped so far, and to everyone who will help in the future. Let’s keep fighting.
