Proposed amendment to ban same-sex marriage in Pennsylvania stalled
May 07, 2008
Chris Johnson
A bill seeking to amend Pennsylvania’s state constitution to prohibit same-sex marriage as well as civil unions and domestic partnerships appears to have stalled for the legislative session. On May 6, the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Michael Brubaker, asked the State Senate to table the bill indefinitely, which the Senate agreed to do.
Sen. Brubaker reportedly decided to table the bill because he did not believe it could advance in the Pennsylvania House that is controlled by pro-equality legislators, even if the Senate passed the bill. The bill had passed a Senate committee on Monday.
Pennsylvania statutory law already prohibits marriage by same-sex couples and many consider the proposed amendment overkill.
